Dimitri sat down in one of the two chairs in the room, draping one leg over the other. He lifted his glass and took a small sip, savoring the floral undertones of the wine. The flames from the fireplace only added to the peaceful atmosphere. It was almost perfect. The only thing that would make this moment complete was if his family was with him, but his wife and two of his daughters were at home, and his third daughter, Ella, left home years ago. He sighed and leaned back into his chair. Instead, he sat in this abandoned cabin, waiting. If his beliefs weren’t such a vital part of his life, he would have given up on the spheres long ago. If the people he chose couldn’t get two simple things right, then how could he expect them to handle the bigger issues that arose?
He took another sip of the wine. She was late. Later than usual. He paused with the glass halfway to his lips when the door opened and she walked in. He let the wine sit on his tongue for a moment before swallowing it and turning to her. She always knew how to make an entrance.
“Dimitri, I’m sorry. I got waylaid at the Castle,” she said, taking the seat beside him, and accepting the glass he offered.
The look on her face gave him pause. It seemed she, too, had failed him. “She’s alive?”
She nodded her head even before she answered. “Yes. Unfortunately.”
Of course she was alive. He tightened his grip on his glass. “What happened?” He stared into the fire.
She leaned back in her seat. “I don’t know. I wasn’t there. All I know is that she was attacked. As was her entire troop. George brought her back.” She turned toward him and took another small sip. “The Castle is in an uproar. This is the first chance I had to come and I can’t stay long, for obvious reasons. Queen Abigail has vowed to stop at nothing to find out who would harm her daughter. Heir to the throne,” she spat.
The hate in her voice surprised him the first time he heard it, but now it was the only thing he heard. It almost brought a smile to his lips. So many people would be surprised. “How badly is she hurt?”
After a moment’s pause, she answered. “I don’t know.”
He slumped forward in his chair. How could she not know? He stood, threw his glass into the fire, turned, grabbed her glass, and threw it into the fire too. He leaned close to her with his hands gripping the arms of her chair. “What do you mean you don’t know?”
“Don’t try that; you do not intimidate me.” He sighed and sat back down. “Jessop has forbid anyone from entering her room and Queen Abigail would never go against his orders. Even if she wanted to, as Royal Healer, he has the final say. Jalen’s personal guards are stationed outside her door on either side. Not
